Norfolk, Va. - The No. 65 Georgia State women's tennis team defeated Old Dominion, 4-3, Friday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. Senior Katerina Gresova clinched the match at No. 4 singles.
Georgia State improves to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
With the Panthers leading 3-2 overall in the match, Gresova clinched the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, against Juliana Pires at No. 4 singles.
Georgia State won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Maryna Kozachenko and Abigail Tere-Apisah won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles against Joanna Dobrowolska and Melissa Esnal Olguin.
Vi Truong and Katerina Gresova won 8-5 at No. 3 doubles against Arina Alilueva and Nika Khmolovska.
Old Dominion picked up its lone victory at No. 2 doubles when Diana Ivanova and Juliana Pires won 8-7 (7-5) against Tereza Lerova and Kir Kemp.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead as Tere-Apisah was leading 3-0 in the first set when Diana Ivanova retired. Tere-Apisah improves to 9-1 in singles.
The Monarchs cut GSU's lead to 2-1 after Nika Khmolovska won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 against Othilia Lindqvist at No. 6 singles.
Old Dominion tied the match at 2-2 when Joanna Dobrowolska won in straight sets at No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-4, against Lerova.
Kemp gave GSU the lead for good after winning in straight sets at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-3, against Arina Alilueva. Kemp has won three straight matches and has a team-leading 10-3 record in singles.
After Gresova's clincher, the Monarchs picked up their third point when Melissa Esnal Olguin won in straight sets 6-3, 7-5, against Kozachenko.
Georgia State now heads to Richmond, Va., to face No. 37 VCU Saturday at 10 a.m.
