Women's Tennis Wins Home Opener over ETSU, 4-3

ATLANTA - The Georgia State women's tennis team (5-0) survived East Tennessee State (2-4) and remained unbeaten with a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Piedmont Park. Freshman Maryna Kozachenko clinched the match with a straight sets win at No. 4 singles.

"We came out with a lot of energy in doubles," said head coach Miha Lisac. "We need to continue to improve in singles, but it was nice to win our home opener today."

With the Panthers leading 3-2 overall, Kozachenko downed Karina Kedzo, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 4 singles for the clinching point. The freshman from the Ukraine is now 5-0 in singles.

Georgia State won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match. No. 40 Tereza Lerova/Kir Kemp won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles and improved to 4-0 overall.

The Panthers also earned victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, both by an 8-6 score.

ETSU would tie the score with a straight sets victory at No. 6 singles.

Freshman Abigail Tere-Apisah gave GSU the lead after winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles. Tere-Apisah won her second straight match and improved to 2-0 in singles.

The Buccaneers tied the score again after earning a victory at No. 1 singles. Against ETSU's Kelly Holtzhausen, Tereza Lerova dropped the first set, 6-3, and fought back in the second set but lost in a tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6). Lerova held off two straight match points in the tiebreaker to tie the score at 6-6 before dropping the next two to fall 8-6.

Junior Kir Kemp gave the Panthers the lead for good as she won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0, at No. 5 singles and improved to 4-1 on the season.

In the final match of the day, senior Katerina Gresova lost the first set, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. Gresova came back to win the second set, 6-4, before falling in the third, 6-4, to suffer her first loss of the year.

Georgia State returns to action tomorrow to face Georgia Southern at 10 a.m. at Piedmont Park.
