ATLANTA - The Georgia State men's tennis team (6-3) remained perfect at home after defeating Tennessee Tech, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Piedmont Park. Sophomore Lucas Santana won the clinching point at No. 6 singles in straight sets.
"We looked very solid today," said head coach Chase Hodges. "Our doubles play was outstanding and it carried over into singles. This team (TTU) beat us last season, so I think this 6-1 victory shows how much we have improved in one season. We hope to keep the momentum going in tomorrow's doubleheader."
Georgia State holds a perfect 4-0 record at home this season. Tennessee Tech fell to 1-4 on the season.
The Panthers swept the doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match. At No. 2 doubles, Trenton Spinks/Vincent Verpeaux won 8-1 to set the tone. Juan Pablo Gutierrez/Lucas Santana followed with an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. The Gutierrez/Santana team has a 5-2 record in doubles. Thomas Cook/Victor Valente, playing together for the second straight match, finished off the win at No 1 doubles, 8-5.
Georgia State increased its lead after Juan Pablo Gutierrez won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles. Gutierrez improved his record to 6-3 in singles.
Sophomore Victor Valente gave the Panthers a 3-0 overall lead after winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Valente improved to 6-3 in singles.
Santana clinched the match for the first time this season when he won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 6 singles. Santana holds a 7-2 record in singles, including a 6-1 mark at the No. 6 spot.
Freshman Thomas Cook won in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), at No. 3 singles. Cook is 6-1 in singles, including a perfect 5-0 record at the No. 3 spot.
Freshman Vincent Verpeaux had a tough match at No. 5 singles, dropping the first set 7-6 (7-2). Verpeaux came back to win the second set 6-1, and then won the third set super tiebreaker 10-7. He now has a 7-2 record in singles.
The final match of the day came at No. 2 singles, where freshman Gabe Townes lost in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8). Townes won the second set to force the third set super tiebreaker but fell in the end.
Georgia State returns to action tomorrow to play a doubleheader against Chattanooga at 11 a.m. and North Georgia at 6 p.m. at Piedmont Park.
