GSU Performs Well at Mountaineer Open; Claim Three Victories

BOONE, N.C. -- Three victories and 11 top four finishes highlighted the Mountaineer Open for the Georgia State track and field squad this weekend in Boone, N.C.

Freshman Anna Sinclair continued her strong indoor season with a victory in the 3,000-meter dash with a time of 10:26.61. Sinclair has now won two races in three indoor meets this year.

Fellow distance runner Katharine Showalter breezed through the field in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:57.45, besting her closest competitor by 10 seconds. Junior Kacee Houle placed fifth in the 5,000 with a time of 19:18.99.

The 4x400-meter relay team showed flashes of past brilliance as they claimed first in a time of 3:54.13, three seconds faster than the next closest team. Angelia Nugent, Brandy Swann, Tatiana Colbert and Danielle Hill made up the winning squad.

Freshman Olivia Fisher finished third in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.11, while sophomore Tamara Moore placed second in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.20 during the prelims before false starting in the finals.  

Nugent placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.60, while senior Danyel Mitchell also played fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.30.

In the field events, senior Yolanda Berryhill placed second in the shot put with a toss of 13.70m (44-11.50), while freshman Tatiana Colbert finished seventh in the long jump with a leap of 5.31m (17-05.25).

The men's team was paced by a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter run from junior Chris Harper, who completed the race in 9:05.55. Freshman Tyler Tomy crossed soon afterwards in fifth place with a time of 9:17.36.

Fellow freshman Carlos Galindo placed third in the 5,000 with a time of 16:16.57.

The Panthers return to action next weekend when they head to State College, Pa., and the campus of Penn State to compete in the Penn State National.
