Panthers Win 4th Straight to End Regular-Season

NORFOLK, Va. (April 5, 2009) The Georgia State women's tennis team rolled to its fourth consecutive win this afternoon, defeating CAA foe No. 51 William and Mary, 6-1, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The win marks the Panthers' last match of the regular season as they enter the CAA tournament on April 16th in Williamsburg, Va.

“I'd like to extend congratulations to VCU and William and Mary because they have both been top teams in the conference this year,” said head coach Miha Lisac. “But they are always humble and always show a lot of class in victory or defeat.”

The win is the Panthers' first over perennial CAA power William and Mary, which has won the conference title 20 of the last 24 years.

For the second consecutive day, Georgia State captured the doubles point winning two of three matches on courts two and three. Doubles tangent, Dariana Kozmina and Kiara Powell were the first off the court, defeating Katie Kargl and Barbara Zidek, 8-6, at no. 3. The Tribe answered with an 8-6 win over Martina Nitkova and Katerina Gresova at No. 1. The doubles point came down to a tie-breaker on court two as the duo of Diana Nakic and Martina Ondrackova battled to a 9-8(5) win over Katarina Zoricic and Carmen Pop.

The Panthers rolled right into singles, winning three straight to clinch the match. First off the court was Martina Ondrackova who was up 4-1 before the Tribe's Katie Kargl retired due to injury. Diana Nakic put the Panthers up 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Katarina Zoricic on court one and Kiara Powell sealed the win with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Barbara Zidek at No. 5.

Carmen Pop picked up the Tribe's only singles point, winning 6-4, 7-5 over Katerina Gresova on court four as Dariana Kozmina and Martina Nitkova pushed the score to 6-1 with wins at No. 3 and 2, respectively.

“I am very proud of the team and the way they played this whole weekend against two nationally ranked teams on the road,” said Lisac. “They responded, as a team, to the challenge and that's how we were able to come out on top.”

Georgia State will spend the week preparing for the CAA Championships to be held April 16-19 in Williamsburg, Va.
