MOBILE, ALA. (Mar. 11, 2009) The Georgia State women's tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 74 South Alabama on Tuesday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts, but defeated Indiana State 6-1 on Wednesday to improve to 5-4 om the year.
South Alabama secured two wins in doubles to secure the early point as Kiara Powell and Dariana Kozmina fell 8-4 to 54th-ranked Sylvanie Spangenberg and Michaela Babicova at No. 1 and Diana Nakic and Linda Hricistova dropped an 8-5 decision to Erica Krisan and Katie Welch at No. 2 doubles.
The Lady Jags opened singles competition with a win at No. 5 as South Alabama's Sylvanie Spangenberg won 6-2 in the first set over Martina Ondrackova. Ondrackova battled back and won the second set 6-4, but fell 6-3 in the third. No. 65 Diana Nakic picked up the Panthers only point, winning 6-1, 6-3 over Michaela Babicova at No. 1.
South Alabama went on to win at No. 6 and secured the match victory with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kiara Powell at No. 4. The Lady Jags extended its point total to six with wins at No. 3 and No. 2 over Katerina Gresova and Dariana Kozmina, respectively.
The Panthers continued their stay in Alabama as they took Indiana State on Wednesday at 2 p.m. State picked up the doubles point after winning two straight at No. 1 and No. 2. Diana Nakic and Katerina Gresova defeated Sarah Meghoufel and Elmine Botes 8-1 and Dariana Kozmina and Kiara Powell battled Sofya Lifanova and Anna Morgina to an 8-7(6) score.
Georgia State continued to roll in singles play with No. 65 Diana Nakic picking up the first singles point for the Panthers with a win over Sarah Meghoufel at No. 1 after Meghoufel retired in the second set.
Linda Hricistova pushed the lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Aleksandra Dzakula at No. 5 and Katerina Gresova clinched the match and the Panthers' fourth point with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Elmine Botes at No. 3. Kiara Powell earned a singles win at No. 4, pushing her match against Sofya Lifanova to three sets (4-6, 6-4, 11-9).
The Panthers return home on Sunday for the final home match of the season against ETSU at 9 a.m. All home matches are played at the Sharon E. Lester Tennis Center at Piedmont Park.
