Baran Soyler picked up two singles wins and two doubles victories, all at the No. 1 flight, to lead the Georgia State men's tennis team to wins over Elon, 4-3, and South Carolina State, 5-2, on the opening day of the 2024 season.
The season-opening 4-3 win over Elon went right down to the wire as another newcomer,
Naufal Kamaruzzaman, won the deciding match at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-3.
Kamaruzzan, a graduate transfer from Shah Alam, Malaysia, teamed with
Maxwell Weir to clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 flight. GSU got singles wins from Soyler, the sophomore from Adana, Turkey, at No. 1 and junior
Edward Tymes at No. 3, but Elon evened the match at 3-3, setting up Kamaruzzan's deciding singles match.
Against South Carolina State, Soyler and partner Gabrielle Datei picked up their second win of the day at No. 1 doubles, but the Panthers dropped the doubles point. Georgia State then took four of the six singles flights for the 5-2 win. Weir delivered the clinching match with a three-set win at No. 5 singles.
Tymes posted singles victories in both matches at the No. 3 spot, taking down his opponents 6-1, 6-1 (Elon) and 6-4, 6-3 (South Carolina State).
The Panthers look to keep their success going next weekend as they host Chattanooga on Friday, Jan. 26 at 12 p.m. and Stetson on Sunday Jan. 28 at 1 p.m.
