Datei Named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week

ATLANTA— After charting an unbeaten 3-0 record competing at the top singles and doubles court positions over the weekend, Georgia State men's tennis freshman Gabriele Datei has been named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Wednesday. Datei partnered alongside teammate Roberts Grinvalds at No. 1 doubles to secure consecutive victories over Charlotte and conference foe Coastal Carolina, and notched a 7-6, 6-3 win in straight sets at the top singles court facing the Chanticleers.

Making an appearance at No. 1 singles for the first time in 2023, Datei's straight-set victory over Coastal Carolina helped lift a shorthanded GSU to its first conference win of the spring on Sunday. Doubles competition saw Datei team with Grinvalds for a one-sided 6-2 victory at the first court facing CCU, and a 6-4 victory facing Charlotte on Friday.

Datei's match at the first singles court against Charlotte went unfinished, 6-1, 6-7, leading up a set.

A native of Bergamo, Italy, Datei has seen action at the top three singles courts in every outing for GSU this season. The freshman has currently notched seven singles victories for the Panthers this spring, to go with six victories in doubles play.

GSU currently charts a 4-14 overall record for the spring with a 1-3 mark in conference play. The Panthers return to action next weekend with a pair of conference matchups facing SBC rival South Alabama on Saturday, April 8, and Troy on Sunday, April 9.
