Georgia State Qualifies for Match Play at Sun Belt Men’s Golf Championship

EL DORADO, Ark. – Led by Jacob Kephart's tie for fifth, the Georgia State men's golf team shot a final round 16-over 304 to finish fourth and qualify as one of four teams to reach match play at the Sun Belt Championship at Mystic Creek Golf Club.

The Panthers qualified for match play for the first time since 2017 when Georgia State won the championship as a No. 4-seed. GSU will now play No. 1-seed Georgia Southern in one of two semifinal matches on Wednesday morning. The other semifinal will feature Little Rock, which tied Georgia Southern for first place, facing UT Arlington. Both matches will start at 9:30 a.m. ET, with the Georgia State/Georgia Southern match starting on the first hole.

Teams jostled for one of the top four positions all afternoon and when all was said and done, teams No. 4 thru No. 10 were separated by just nine strokes, but it was Georgia State advancing to match play. Georgia State is 3-1 all-time in match play in the conference tournament with a 13-6-1 individual match record.

Kephart earned All-Tournament recognition after a final round 74 left him at 6-over par and tied for fifth. Texas State's Evan White earned low medalist honors finishing at even par, the only player in the field to not shoot over par for the week.

Senior Owen Sertl tied for 12th at 8-over par following a final round 2-over 74. Sertl made birdies at Holes No. 6 and 7 (his 15th and 16th holes of the day) which proved to be the difference finishing one stroke ahead of Coastal Carolina which played fifth at 41-over par.

"I'm so proud of this team," head coach Chad Wilson said. "Coming into this week, the team truly believed in themselves and they came out and showed it. However, we came here to do more than finish fourth. We are excited to reach match play, but now we want to go win the championship. That starts on Wednesday morning facing a very good Georgia Southern team. It will be a great #StateNotSouthern battle."
