Fearnley Earns Top United Soccer Coaches Academic Honors

ATLANTA – Matthew Fearnley, a junior on Georgia State men's soccer team, has earned a pair of top academic honors this week having been named to the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Scholar All-America Team as well as the United Soccer Coaches Association Scholar All-Region Team.

Fearnley led the Panthers to a 9-2-2 record during the fall and a sixth-straight Sun Belt Conference championship game appearance. The junior earned All-Sun Belt recognition and helped guide the nations' most-prolific offense in the fall fall while tying for the team lead with five goals to go along with an assist. He led the nation with three game-winning goals in just 13 matches. Along with being tied for second in the NCAA in goals during the fall, he was second in the nation with 11 points, behind only teammate Aris Briggs.

Fearnley was named to the All-Sun Belt Preseason Team and twice named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week last season. He also drew a pair of honors on the College Soccer News Team of the Week as well as twice being named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week.

Earlier this week Fearnley earned President's List honors for once again having a GPA of 4.0 or better. It marked his second time garnering the school's top academic honor to go along with three appearances on the Dean's List and one on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. He is currently majoring in health and physical education with a plan to be a coach.

To be eligible for Scholar All-America recognition, student-athletes must have at least a 3.40 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) or better throughout career and have started more than 50 percent of all games (minimum of seven games) during the season of nomination and be an elite player as supported by playing honors (ie. all-conference) and/or contributions to their team.

Georgia State will report back to campus in early August to start preparations for the 2021 season.
