ATLANTA — The Panthers took an early lead at home against their in-state rivals, but could not hold on in the second half. The Eagles netted three goals to take the 3-1 victory on the final day of the Sun Belt regular season.
How it Happened
Bringing an undefeated record at home into their final game, the Panthers looked to get started quickly against the visitors from Georgia Southern. It took just over 10 minutes for Georgia State to put their first shot on goal, and
Tom Williams made sure it counted. Redirecting a cross from
Sandro Rabarivony, Williams used a header to put the game's opening score into the back of the net.
The Eagles wagered a pair of shots on goal in the first half, but each met the waiting arms of goalkeeper
Loan Marin to preserve the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Southern scored nearly as quickly in the second half as State had in the first. A shot from distance found twine in the 57th minute to knot the score up at 1-1.
With the Eagles threatening to score once more, Marin put a stop to a charging shot, but could not corral it. Southern's Noah Holstrom looked to pot the rebound with Marin suddenly out of position, but defender
Tom Fillaudeau was in position to deflect the potential go-ahead shot.
The Panthers strong defense eventually did give way, letting up a pair of late scores en route to the 3-1 defeat.
Game Notes
- Marin played every single minute in goal for the Panthers in the regular season
- Williams brought his point total up to eight on the season, good for third-most on the team
- Evan Bohms played all 90 minutes for the 13th straight game, second only to Marin for the longest such streak to end the season
- The defeat marked State's first loss to Southern since 2019
