KENNESAW, Ga. – Georgia State women's tennis (1-5) suffered a 4-3 setback against Kennesaw State (2-3) Tuesday afternoon at the Betty Siegel Recreation Center.
The Panthers opened strong, as veteran Eva Chivu and freshman Maddy Frediani registered a 6-1 win on court one. Shortly afterwards, Angel Carney and Alexia Alvarez notched an identical result on court three to clinch the doubles point for GSU. This marked the first time during the 2021 campaign that Georgia State took the doubles point and the advantage going into singles play.
Kennesaw State came alive in singles action, gaining the lead with three straight-set victories on courts three, five, and six. In response to the Owls' surge, Carney put the Panthers back within striking distance with a 6-2, 6-4 decision on court two. Shortly afterwards, Andreea Stanescu, playing in position four, knotted the match, finding her second victory of the season.
Chivu and Kennesaw State's Taylor Dean fought in a tough battle on the top court. Each competitor took a set by a score of 6-4 before entering the third and final frame. The two would remain neck and neck. Ultimately, Dean outlasted Chivu in a tiebreaker to claim the contest's final point.
Georgia State will return to action Friday at College of Charleston before battling Chattanooga Saturday. Friday's first serve is set for 1:00 p.m. Fans can follow along via live stats.
