Panthers Set to Conclude Fall Play at Georgia Tech Invitational

ATLANTA - After a successful fall campaign that produced multiple stellar performances, the Georgia State men's tennis team will conclude fall play when it travels across town to Georgia Tech for the Georgia Tech Invitational this weekend (Nov. 5-7) at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

Four teams will compete in the tournament including Georgia State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and host Georgia Tech.

Each player will compete in one singles match, and each doubles pair will compete in one doubles match per day. Action will begin at 11:00 a.m. each morning.

FALL CAMPAIGN
(ITA Southeast Regionals)

  • As a team, Georgia State had a tough first day of action at the ITA Southeast Regionals as Harvey Maughan, Diego Padilha, Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds all narrowly dropped their first round singles matches. Each contest was tightly contested, but the Panthers were unable to come out victorious.
  • Edward Tymes and Patrick Lazo also put together solid performances in the singles qualifying rounds to start the tournament. Lazo picked up a win over Matthew Carrol of UNF (6-4, 2-6 [10-4]), before eventually falling in the next round.
  • Duarte and Grinvalds reached the semfinals of the doubles main draw. Along the way, they picked up doubles victories over pairs from Georgia Tech, FAU and Florida, before falling to a pair from Miami (Fla.) in the semifinals.
  • Duarte and Grinvalds also put together stellar runs in the singles backdraw. After dropping early contests in the main draw, both players went on a run as Grinvalds defeated Juan Martin Jalif of Miami (6-4, 6-4) and Lucas Wayenburg of Mercer (6-1, 6-4), while Duarte defeated Munuel Goncalves of USF (6-3, 6-2) and Gerard Escandell of FAU (6-3, 6-3).

(Mercer Gridiron Classic)

  • Grinvalds, Padilha and Mihai Marinescu were all crowned singles champions during the Mercer Gridiron Classic in Macon, Ga. As a team, GSU accumulated a 20-3 singles record and a 5-3 doubles record for the weekend en route to winning three of the five singles draws.
  • Overall, Grinvalds has won his singles draw in consecutive tournaments while tallying an 8-0 mark.
  • Marinescu accumulated a 4-0 record en route to winning the singles flight A2 draw, while Padilha went 4-0 and won the singles flight b1 draw. Duarte, Tymes and Kim also put together solid singles performances as they combined to go 8-3 with each player only dropping one match.
  • Entering the final day of competition, the Panthers had only dropped one singles match while owning a 16-1 record.
  • In doubles action, the freshman duo of Kim and Tymes played their first tournament together and went 2-1 for the weekend. The ITA preseason top-60 duo of Duarte and Grinvalds also went 2-1 for the weekend.

(Panther Invitational)

  • During the Panther Invitational, Duarte and Grinvalds opened the fall season in spectacular fashion as they both went 4-0 in singles play, while winning their individual singles draws. Duarte won the Panther Invitational singles blue draw, while Grinvalds won the singles white draw.
  • As a pair, the duo accumulated a 2-0 record en route to winning the doubles blue draw. As a team, Georgia State accumulated a 15-5 singles mark against the opposing schools, while notching a 5-3 doubles record.
  • The Panthers dominated the singles tournaments as both finals consisted of all Georgia State players. On the blue side, Duarte defeated Marinescu 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and, on the white side, Grinvalds defeated Maughan 7-5, 6-2. The finals losses were Marinescu and Maughan's only singles losses for the entire weekend.
