Panthers Remain Unbeaten, Top South Carolina 3-1

Box Score COLUMBIA, S.C. – Georgia State scored two first half goals just 51 seconds part, added another one late, and earned a 3-1 win over South Carolina on Thursday night at Stone Stadium.

Junior Matthew Fearnley got Georgia State (2-0, 0-0 Sun Belt) on the board with a goal in the lower left corner of the net with 12:51 to play in the first half for his first goal of the year. Freshman Jeryn Hodge responded less than a minute later with his first career goal to give the Panthers a 2-0 advantage.

South Carolina cut the deficit in half in the 69th minute before freshman Simon Carlson found the back of the net in the 85th minute, scoring his first career goal and helping secure the win.

The Panthers topped South Carolina (1-1, 0-0 C-USA) for the first time since 1978 just days after being named the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week.

Senior goalkeeper Paul Tyson made a couple of key early stops and finished the match with six saves.

MATCH NOTES
  • Fearnley's first half goal was the ninth of his Georgia State career.
  • All three of Georgia State's goals were unassisted.
  • South Carolina lone goal was by Kyle Guerrieri in the 69th minute.
  • Georgia State was playing the first of two-straight and three overall matches against Conference USA opponents this season.
SERIES NOTES
  • Georgia State snapped a 12-match losing streak to South Carolina and beat the Gamecocks for the first time since Oct. 21, 1978. It marked the second win all-time for the Panthers over USC.
