Senior Josh Edgar's senior season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He recently decided that he would come back for one more season with a goal of getting the Panthers back to the NCAA Championship. This is his story in his own words.
Â
Thursday, March 12, is a day that I will never forget. The team had driven to Statesboro, Ga., and we were playing a practice round for the Schenkel Invitational. The night before the practice round the NBA had cancelled the remainder of their season due to the coronavirus, but we still maintained hope that we would get to finish out our collegiate season. Throughout the practice round teams were getting called back to their respective campuses and suddenly the realization hit that this might be the last round of my collegiate career. I was one of our four seniors on the trip and I remember all of us looking at each other on the 18
th green and thinking "Is this it? Surely it can't be over?"Â Â Â Â Â
Â
Initially, it was difficult comprehending the situation. Personally, I felt like something had been taken away from me. We were approaching the business end of the season and I was looking forward to chasing down a second Sun Belt Conference Championship ring to end my collegiate career. Additionally, both my parents were set to fly out from Australia to watch me play two tournaments in April. My mum was fortunate enough to see me play one collegiate event, but my dad has never seen me compete. It was supposed to be a special moment to play my last collegiate events in front of my parents who have been my biggest supporters from day one.
Â
When the NCAA announced that spring sport seniors were going to get the opportunity to come back and compete for the fifth year, I knew I was coming back. I knew I had to work out some of the details, but the thought of coming back gave me excitement and hope. Being able to play a collegiate sport at Georgia State has made this time the best years of my life. I have had so many great life experiences from the competitive tournaments including the relationships I have built and the coaches that have guided me along the way. I knew I wasn't ready to walk away from Georgia State or college golf.Â
Â
I believe we are going to have a strong lineup next year with a lot of experience from the seniors who are trying to return. I would love to win the Sun Belt Conference Championship and play in the NCAA Championship. A personal goal of mine has always been to win a collegiate event. I have come close, but never sealed the deal so that will be my focus throughout this coming season. With a new practice facility at Bobby Jones, great coaches, and experienced players, I am excited for the 2020/21 season to begin.
