Softball Wraps Up THE Spring Games

The Panthers defeated Monmouth 8-4 Sunday.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. -- Georgia State's softball team wrapped up THE Spring Games with losses to Butler and Akron and a win over Monmouth.

The Panthers fell 1-0 to Butler and 8-6 to Akron on Saturday before ending the weekend on a high note with an 8-4 victory vs. Monmouth on Sunday.

Against Butler, Savannah Freeman threw a gem, allowing just two hits over 6.0 innings and striking out five. One of those hits, however, was a solo home run that was enough for Butler to win the game.

The GSU offense had eight hits, led by Daisy Hess' 3-for-3 performance, but couldn't push a run across.

In the second game Saturday against Akron, Caitlin Ray continued her hot start to the season with a 2-for-3 night with a home run and two RBI. Daisy Hess also hit a two-run homer.

Two costly errors ended up being the difference as Akron scored three unearned runs.

On Sunday, Georgia State raced out to an 8-1 lead before Monmouth made things interesting with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman pitcher Sophie Mooney struck out the last two batters of the fifth an then struck out the side in the sixth for five straight strikeouts.

GSU scored eight runs on 12 hits and all starting nine batters recorded a hit. Freshman Sofia Tunon went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Gabby Benson was 1-for-3 with three RBI.

Georgia State returns to Atlanta and will host crosstown rival Georgia Tech Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Bob Heck Softball Complex.
