ATLANTA-Georgia State baseball standout
Elian Merejo led the Panthers to a perfect 3-0 opening weekend and was named the Georgia State Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Merejo went 7-for-11 with two homers, two doubles, seven RBI and seven runs scored to lead Georgia State to a perfect start under first-year head coach
Brad Stromdahl. The Panthers swept three games against 2019 NCAA Regional team Cincinnati, St. John's and Saint Peter's, and Merejo figured prominently in all three wins.
The senior designated hitter was also walked five times in the three games, including three intentional walks.
In the Opening Day win over Cincinnati, the Bearcats took the lead with four runs in the third, but in the bottom half, Merejo responded with a two-run blast to cut the deficit to 5-3. In the 10th inning, he smacked a one-out double and then scored the winning run for the walk-off win.
Merejo was 2-for-3 with an RBI-single in the Saturday 7-5 win over St. John's
Against Saint Peter's, GSU fell behind 5-1, but Merejo's three-run homer in the fifth inning jump-started the offense and pulled the Panthers within 5-4. Then he was intentionally walked in Georgia State's 3-run sixth inning and again in the eighth inning to set up the game-winning hit by
Josh Smith.
The Panthers will look to remain undefeated heading to Gardner-Webb on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. start in Boiling Springs, N.C.
