Panthers Fall to Old Dominion in Series Opener

ATLANTA, GA -- Georgia State was unable to recover from an early deficit as Old Dominion used a pair of big innings to hand the Panthers a 10-2 loss Friday night at the GSU Baseball Complex.

The Panthers fall to 20-22 overall and 8-11 in Sun Belt play, while Old Dominion improves to 21-20 and 9-10 in conference action.

Old Dominion struck early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Georgia State answered in the bottom of the first when Wills Maginnis walked, stole two bases and scored on an RBI double from Cole Griffith to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Monarchs responded with their biggest inning of the night in the third. A solo home run and a two-RBI single highlighted a three-run frame as Old Dominion extended its lead to 6-1.

Georgia State added its second run in the fourth inning. Austin Killingsworth doubled and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-2, but the Panthers were unable to get any closer.

Old Dominion broke the game open in the fifth inning with three more runs on a pair of doubles, pushing the lead to 9-2. The Monarchs added a final run in the seventh to account for the 10-2 margin.

Griffith led the Panthers offensively with two hits and an RBI, while Killingsworth added a double and a run scored. Brandon Davis also recorded a hit off the bench as Georgia State finished with five hits.

On the mound, Cooper Lewis (1-2) was charged with the loss. Brian Crooms provided 4.0 innings of relief, and Montrell Christian Jr. struck out four over the final two innings.
