Panthers Take Down No. 7 Coastal Carolina in Series Finale

CONWAY, SC -- Georgia State delivered its second top-10 win of the season in emphatic fashion, erupting for six runs in the eighth inning to defeat No. 7 Coastal Carolina 11-5 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Springs Brooks Stadium.

The Panthers improve to 20-21 overall and 8-10 in Sun Belt play, while Coastal Carolina falls to 28-11.

After falling behind early, Georgia State chipped away throughout the middle innings before breaking the game open late. Coastal Carolina took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run home run and extended its advantage to 5-2 in the fourth with back-to-back home runs.

Georgia State got on the board in the third when Carter Bailey launched a solo home run to left field. The Panthers added another run in the fourth as Lucas Grantham delivered an RBI single to tie the game at 2-2 before Coastal regained the lead in the bottom half.

The Panthers began their comeback in the sixth inning. Cole Griffith and Nick Garagozzo reached base before Wesley Bass delivered a two-run single to cut the deficit to 5-4.

Georgia State tied the game in the seventh when John Beverley connected on a solo home run to left field, making it 5-5.

The game turned in the eighth inning as the Panthers exploded offensively. Garagozzo was hit by a pitch, and Adam Haber drew a walk before Bass worked another free pass to load the bases. Hunter Carlson was hit by a pitch to bring in the go-ahead run, and Wills Maginnis followed with a three-run double to break the game open. Sam Silas added an RBI groundout, and Griffith capped the inning with an RBI single to extend the lead to 11-5.

On the mound, Will Bartkoski (3-0) was dominant in relief, tossing 5.0 innings while allowing just one hit and striking out three to earn the win and shut down the Coastal Carolina offense down the stretch.

Maginnis led the Panthers with two hits and three RBIs, while Beverley added two hits, including a home run, and two runs scored. Bass drove in two runs, and Bailey added a home run as part of an 11-hit effort.
