ATLANTA- Georgia State women's tennis swept a pair of matches Saturday at the GSU Clarkston campus. The Panthers bested Sun Belt rival Arkansas State in the morning and recorded a non-conference win over UAB in the afternoon.
In the opening match, GSU quickly fell behind 2-0 after losing the doubles point and not having a participant in the number six singles slot. It would not take long for the Panthers to bounce back as Daniela Ramirez and Lara Vovk earned quick two set wins to even the match score.
Georgia State would fall on court five, but Damira Muminovic would grit out a win on court three to even the score at 3-3. The match came down to court one where Eva Chivu won the first set, but lost the second resulting in a deciding full third frame. After neither player being able to break serve through six games, Chivu pulled away winning 6-3 and giving the Panthers a 4-3 win in the match.
In the afternoon session, the Panthers took the doubles point as Chivu and Ramirez won 6-1 on court one, and Muminovic and Vovk followed winning 6-3 on court two. The Panthers would drop singles court six by walkover, but Chivu would give GSU a 2-1 lead with her second singles victory of the day.
Muminovic would take her second win of the day on court three giving State a 3-1 lead over the Blazers. Matches on courts two, four, and five would all be pushed the distance, but it would be Ramirez on court two who would give the Panthers the clinch with a 6-2 third set win.
The Panthers will be back at the Clarkston Courts next weekend for a pair of morning matches against the Sun Belt's Texas schools. GSU will host Texas State on Saturday and UT Arlington on Sunday. Both matches are set for 10:30 a.m. start times.
