STATESBORO, Ga. – Led by a 1-over 73 from junior Egill Gunnarsson, Georgia State shot a second-round 14-over 302 to stand in a tie for 12th place entering the final round of the Schenkel Invitational hosted by in-state rival Georgia Southern at Forest Heights Country Club.
The Panthers are 25-over with 18 holes to play on Sunday and stand just 11 strokes out of seventh place.
Gunnarsson made two birdies during the second round to move into a tie for 28th at 3-over par.
“Today's round simply came down to making too many mistakes and not enough birdies,” head coach Chad Wilson said. “There were birdies out there to be made today and we just couldn't get the putts to drop. Hopefully, on Sunday those putts can drop, and we can move up the leaderboard.”
Senior Josh Edgar added a 3-over 75 and is tied for 59th at 9-over par. Sophomore Owen Sertl shot a second round 4-over 76 and is tied for 49th at 6-over par, while senior Severin Soller added a 6-over 78 and is tied for 59th at 8-over par. Freshman David Li rounded out the line-up with an 82 and is tied for 82nd at 17-over par.
Senior Nick Budd who is competing as an individual this week shot a 5-over 77 and is tied for 59th at 8-over par.
East Tennessee State shot a tournament low 8-under 280 to take the lead at 11-under par. No. 50 Mississippi State is in second place at 8-under par, while host Georgia Southern is in third place at 6-under par. College of Charleston and Notre Dame are tied for fourth place at 1-under par.
Georgia Southern's Steven Fisk ranked No. 35 in the country, shot a 5-under 67 to take over the individual lead at 7-under par. Mississippi State's Peng Pichaikool sits in second place at 6-under par, while College of Charleston's Logan Sowell is in third-place at 5-under par. East Tennessee State's Geuntae Kim and Notre Dame's Andrew O'Leary are tied for fourth at 4-under par.
Georgia State will be paired Lipscomb going off Hole No. 10 beginning at 8:57 a.m. on Sunday. Live scoring of the entire tournament will be available at Golfstat.com.
Following this week's event, Georgia State will return to the course for the Furman Intercollegiate at the Furman University Course in Greenville, S.C., March 22-24.
