No. 45 FAU Defeats Georgia State in 4-3 Thriller

ATLANTA – In its second consecutive match against a ranked opponent, Georgia State men's tennis nearly knocked off No. 45 Florida Atlantic but ultimately fell short as the Owls picked up a 4-3 victory Tuesday afternoon at the GSU Clarkston Courts.

Tuesday was the Panthers' first loss at home this season and dropped the team to 4-5 overall. FAU improved to 9-7 on the year and have won four of its last six matches.

FAU would take the first victory in doubles play on court one, but Georgia State roared back to take the next two and secure the doubles point.

Giles Hussey and Jack MacFarlane knocked off Gabriel Sidney and Mehdi Laalej 6-3 to win their second doubles match in a row and refine their record to 4-1 in their last five matches. Then Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds defeated their opponents 7-6 (7-5) to earn their second win of the season as partners and give GSU a 1-0 lead heading to singles play.

The Owls quickly built a 3-1 lead with victories on courts five, six and three, but Georgia State wouldn't go away easy. Grinvalds notched a win at the No. 2 position in straight sets to cut into the FAU lead, followed by a three-set victory from Quentin Coulaud to even the score a three apiece.

The win was Coulaud's third in a row, keeping him undefeated at the No. 4 position this year. Grinvalds, a freshman from Bigaunciems, Latvia, won his fourth singles match of the season, tying him with Hussey as the team leader in singles victories.

At the No. 1 position, Hussey fought back after dropping set one 6-3 to take the second set 6-4. Hussey and Legall went back-and-fourth on the final set, but Legall caught momentum late and went on take the it 7-5 and give FAU the win. The loss snapped Hussey's two match win streak, which included back-to-back victories over ranked opponents.

Georgia State returns to the court 12 p.m. Friday for a doubleheader against North Florida and Kennesaw State at the GSU Clarkston Courts.
