NASSAU, Bahamas – Led by a second-straight 1-under 71 from senior Ashton Poole, the Georgia State men's golf team shot a second round 4-over 292 on Saturday at the inaugural White Sands Invitational at the Ocean Club.
Poole, who has three top 25 finishes in three events this fall, made three birdies on day two and stands in a tie for 22nd place.
The Panthers remained in 13th place at 8-over par, but just four strokes behind rival Georgia Southern entering the final round.
"Unfortunately, our problem is really simple right now as we make too many little mistakes and don't make enough birdies," head coach Chad Wilson said. "We are really close to putting it all together, but we need to do it now to give us some momentum heading into the spring. Â Hopefully that happens on Sunday."
Junior Owen Sertl and sophomore David Li each shot 1-over par 73's on Saturday. Sertl stands in a tie for 63rd at 4-over par, while Li is tied for 74th at 7-over par. Senior Egill Gunnarsson stands in a tie for 58th at 3-over par following a 75 in Round 2, while fellow senior Josh Edgar shot a 4-over 76 and is tied for 71st at 6-over par.
No. 39 Houston shot a 7-under 281 and holds a six-stroke lead at 19-under par with 18 holes to play. Florida State is in second-place at 13-under par, with No. 1 Wake Forest in third place at 12-under par. Miami (Ohio) is in fourth-place at 11-under par while No. 2 SMU rounds out the top five at 10-under par.
Following a 60 on Friday, Wake Forest's Parker Gillam shot 71 on Saturday but remains in first place at 11-under par. Miami (Ohio)'s Charlie Nikitas and Arkansas' Julian Perico are tied for second-place at 8-under par. Houston's Luke Long, North Illinois' Jordan Less, and Wisconsin's Nick Robinson are tied for fourth-place at 7-under par.
Live scoring of the entire tournament will be available at Golfstat.com. Georgia State will tee off as part of a shotgun start on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. with Louisiana Tech and individuals for Round 3.
Following this week's event, Georgia State will return to the course to open the spring season Feb. 23-25, at the Puerto Rico Classic at TPC Dorado Beach.
