MARANA, Ariz. – Led by a 3-under 69 from sophomore Alexander Herrmann, Georgia State improved by nine strokes and moved up three spots following a second round 294 at the NCAA Tucson Regional on Tuesday. The Panthers sit tied for ninth entering Wednesday's final round at the Gallery Golf Club.

Georgia State will need to jump four more spots in the final round to advance to the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore., later this month. The Panthers are currently 21-over par and need to catch fifth-place Cal which is 4-over.

Herrmann's round included six birdies as he moved to 1-over for the tournament and tied for 17th. If the Panthers do not finish among the top five, he could still advance to the NCAA Championship if he is the top individual not on a qualifying team.

“I'm really proud of the way the guys bounced back today,” head coach Joe Inman said. “We played a much better round and it shows by the way we moved up the leaderboard. We will need to play extremely well tomorrow and probably get a little lucky to have a chance to advance, but I know this team has the fire-power to do it. We will see what happens.”

Senior JJ Grey shot a second round 74 and stands at 5-over par and tied for 37th entering the final round.

Sophomore Max Herrmann added a 3-over 75 following four birdies. He stands at 9-over par and tied for 53rd.

Junior Nathan Mallonee added a 76 for the Panthers and sits 10-over par and tied for 60th with 18 holes to play. Freshman Nick Budd rounded out the line-up with an 11-over 83 to stand in a tie for 67th at 13-over par.

No. 1 Stanford opened a commanding 15-stroke lead following a second-round 284. The Cardinal are 18-under par entering the final round. No. 24 Oregon is second at 3-under par, followed by No. 37 UAB at 2-under par. No. 36 North Florida is fourth at even par, with No. 13 Cal rounding out the top five at 4-over.

Stanford's Franklin Huang stands as the individual leader by one stroke at 8-under par. UAB's Lee Hodges and Oregon's Thomas Lim are tied for second at 7-under par. Stanford's Maverick McNealy, ranked No. 2 in the country, is in fourth at 5-under par. Cal's K.K. Limbhasut, UC Riverside's Matt Lutz and Stanford's David Boote are tied for fifth at 3-under.

Live scoring of the entire 54-hole tournament will be available at Golfstat.com and on the Golfstat mobile app.

Georgia State will be paired with Louisiana Tech and St. Mary's (Ca.) on Wednesday, going off Hole No. 10 at 10:55 a.m. ET.

If Georgia State finishes among the top five teams, the Panthers will advance to the NCAA Championship May 27-June 1, in Eugene, Ore., at Eugene Country Club.
