ORLANDO, FLA.- The No. 64 Georgia State men's tennis team earned a 4-2 win over UCF in Orlando, Fla. Wednesday afternoon, increasing its win streak to five matches. The Panthers improved to 9-3 following the first of three matches in Florida over spring break. The Knights fell to 6-9.
GSU opened the match strong, winning the first two doubles matches to earn the first point of the match. Sebastian Acuna and Andrei Andrukhou defeated Chris Barrus and Inaki Espindola 7-5 in the No. 1 match. Zackery Kennedy and Jack MacFarlane clinched the point with a 7-5 win over Reece Acree and Tyker Pate, Jannis Koeke and Felipe Jaworski's match went unfinished.
Andrukhou was the first Panther to finish singles play, earning a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jose Sangroniz. Kennedy was the next to finish, falling 6-1, 7-6 (0-3) to Barrus in the No. 2 match. Acuna widened the lead 3-1 with a 7-5, 6-3 defeat of Mariano Porter.
Koeke earned the match-clinching point in the No. 1 match with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Espindola. MacFarlane was the last athlete to finish his match, falling 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 to Nico De Fraia in the tie-breaker set. Jaworksi's match went unfinished.
“We earned a solid road win today. The doubles play was really good at every spot and helped us get an early lead,” head coach Brett Ross said. “UCF fought really hard and made us earn it. Jannis Koeke has been clutch all year and proved it again after being down 3-0 in the third set to get the game-clinching point.”
