BIRMINGHAM – It was a Super Sunday for senior sprinter Ravin Gilbert, who broke her own school record in winning the 200m dash at the South Alabama Jaguar Invitational. The 18-team meet was held on Super Bowl Sunday at the Birmingham Indoor Complex. Six other Sun Belt schools were entered.
Gilbert broke her own school indoor mark in running 24.27 (23.90cv) to race past the 35-sprinter field on Sunday. Gilbert's previous school mark of last season was 24.31.
GSU had another first-place winner in junior LaPorscha Wells in the shot put with a toss of 15.07m (49-5.50) in topping the 28 competitors. Wells' strong weekend also saw her finish second among the 29 weight throwers with a distance of 18.27m (59-11.25).
Two other GSU team members, among the 21 of the 27 who went to Birmingham, earned second-place finishes. Junior Alysiah Whittaker was second to teammate Wells in the shot put (14.52m, 49-07.75). Sophomore long jumper Danielle Livingstone finished second among the 27 jumpers with a distance of 5.48m (17-11.75).
The Panthers had a pair of fourth-place finishes as the 4x400m relay unit clocked 3:50.51 to take fourth of the 16 teams entered. Tracy Dorcemont was fourth in the weight throw with 17.50m (57-05.50).
Two more GSU competitors had fifth-place finishes. Runner Stephanie Berger clocked a 5:04.76 mile run to lower her personal-best time. Jasmyne Robinson was time in 57.29 to take fifth in her specialty, the 400m run.
Nylah Chavis finished seventh among the 26 high jumpers, clearing 1.64m (5-04.50).
Georgia State will compete this weekend at Marshall University's Invitational in Huntington, W.Va. before returning to Birmingham for the Sun Belt Indoor Championships Feb. 22-23.
