ATLANTA – Last time the Georgia State men's tennis team lost a match to Georgia Southern, Sofiane Chevallier was not even one year old. Now a senior playing in his last home game, Chevallier helped the Panthers (9-12) to a 4-0 sweep of their rivals Friday at Atlanta Athletic Club.
“I had some extra motivation today,” Chevallier said. “I saw all the fans here for Senior Day and that meant a lot to me. It's always a good thing to beat a team from Georgia.”
Chevallier paired with Zack Kennedy at No. 1 doubles and the duo won 8-2, but the Eagles won at No. 3 to put the pressure on the No. 2 match. Felipe Jaworski and Jannis Koeke went to a tiebreak with Georgia Southern's Codina Sala/de Groof and edged out the Eagle pair 8-7 (7-4) to clinch the doubles point for the Panthers.
Georgia State head coach Brett Ross honored the team's lone senior, Chevallier, before the start of singles in front of a crowd that included former Panther Thomas Cook as well as GSU student-athletes from various sports. Chevallier responded with a quick, 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles to put the Panthers up 2-0. Georgia State finished off the shutout with a straight-set win from Kennedy at No. 2 and a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win from Andrei Andrukhou in the third flight.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 9-12 on the season while the Eagles falls to 8-13. Georgia State has dominated the rivalry series as of late, winning 14 in a row since 1993. GSU leads the all-time series with a 17-9 record. The Panthers wrap up the 2015 season at No. 63 UNCW Sunday in Wilmington, N.C.
