OPELIKA, Ala. – Georgia State shot an opening round 12-over 300 to stand in eight-place with two rounds to play at the Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner on Sunday afternoon. Junior J.J. Grey led the Panthers with a first day 2-under 70 to stand in fourth-place with 36 holes to play.
Grey made four birdies during the round to keep the Panthers within 10 strokes of first-place Auburn which is ranked No. 8 in the country.
“We had a chance to put a really good round together today, but big numbers hurt us once again,” head coach Joe Inman said. “We made the third-most birdies in the field and with that you should be right near the top of the leaderboard, but too many bogeys and double bogeys moved us out of that position quickly.”
Max Herrmann, competing as an individual, shot a 1-under 71 and is tied for fifth. He made four birdies and an eagle during his round.
Senior Davin White is tied for 35th following a 3-over 75 that included three birdies, while freshman Alexander Herrmann is tied for 49th at 5-over following a 77.
Sophomore Nathan Mallonee, who opened with back-to-back birdies and shot 35 on the front nine, finished the day tied for 61st following a round of 78.
Senior Damon Stephenson rounded out the line-up with a 9-over par 81 that left him in a tie for 79th-place.
No. 8 Auburn leads the field of 16 by four strokes following an opening day 2-over 290. No. 45 Ole Miss is second at 6-over, followed by Kansas State and Tulsa tied for third at 7-over. No. 50 Troy and VCU are tied for fifth at 8-over par.
UNC Greensboro's Taylor Coalson leads the field at 4-under par following a 68. Troy's Jake Tucker and Santa Clara's Hayden Shieh are tied for second at 3-under with Grey in fourth at 2-under. Max Herrmann is tied with Kansas State's Seth Smith in fifth at 1-under.
