MACON, Ga. – Georgia State's men's tennis team dropped the doubles point Monday at Mercer, but won four singles matches to take the contest 4-3 and improve to 7-9 on the season.
The Panthers lost on all three doubles courts to fall behind 1-0 in the match. Sofiane Chevallier and Zack Kennedy have struggled as of late, but still maintain a winning record at No. 1 doubles. Chevallier has seen the opposite in singles play, however. The senior struggled to start the season, but has since won six straight in singles to own a 7-5 record in dual play after Monday's 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 win.
Freshman Sebastian Acuna started the rally for the Panthers winning at No. 3 singles. Jannis Koeke followed that with a win at the top spot to give GSU the 2-0 lead. The Bears won at the No. 4 and 6 match to go back on top at 3-2, but Georgia State won in three sets with both Chevallier at No. 5 and Kennedy at No. 2. Georgia State is no stranger to close matches. Half of the Panthers' 16 matches have been decided by one point with GSU owning a 4-4 record in those contests.
Georgia State has this weekend off before facing No. 25 Drake and Wisconsin-Green Bay in Des Moines, Iowa. The Panthers' match at Mercer was the first of five straight on the road.
