NORFOLK, Va. – Georgia State's women's tennis team improved to 7-4 on Saturday with a 4-3 win over No. 61 VCU in Norfolk, Va. The Panthers are now 3-1 versus ranked opponents.
“I've been pleased with how well our players make adjustments,” head coach Jason Marshall said. “Veronika [Golanova] did a great job today and came up big for us in doubles. We were glad to see her finish strong. Kristin [Rehse] just keeps getting better and it's great to see her development on the court.”
Georgia State and No. 61 VCU split the top two doubles matches to make the No. 3 match the deciding one. Freshman Veronika Golanova and senior Masa Grgan and VCU's No. 3 doubles team went to tie break with the Panther pair winning the match 7-6 to give GSU the doubles point.
The Rams fought back with straight-set wins at singles Nos. 1, 2 and 3, but Georgia State recorded the upset victory with three points at the bottom half of the singles lineup. For senior Chamiaa Roudami, her No. 5 singles win was her team-leading eighth of the season. Golanova competed at No. 6 and won 6-4, 6-4 for her second win of the year. Rehse won in straight sets as well to improve to 6-4.
The ranked win was a good rebound for the Panthers after they lost 6-1 to Old Dominion on Friday. Their weekend doesn't get any easier, however, as the Panthers will meet No. 28 William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. on Sunday at 9 a.m.
