MEMPHIS, TENN. – Georgia State scored first, but host Memphis netted a goal in the final minute of the first half and a second 12 minutes into the second half to claim a 2-1 win Tuesday night at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
The up-tempo game saw 31 shots (16 by Memphis, 15 by Georgia State). GSU goalkeeper Greyson Walldorff had 10 saves, while Memphis keeper Jake Leeker had six saves. The aggressive play by Memphis saw the hosts whistled for 17 fouls and two yellow cards. GSU picked up 10 fouls and one yellow card. GSU had a corner kick advantage of 8-2 and the fast Panthers were called for offside seven times.
GSU (6-2, 2-0 Sun Belt) scored first when Max Hemmings made a goal off an assist from Eddie Wilding at 26:12. It was Wilding's 7th assist of the season and Hemmings' third goal. A key turning point was Memphis taking a shot at 44:05 that was saved by Walldorf, but the rebound allowed a final shot with 37 seconds left in the half with Hector Cantele scoring his first goal of the season.
In the second half, host Memphis (3-7-2, American Athletic Conference) got what proved to be the game-winning goal at 57:16 on a run out by Raul Gonzalez, who deposited his sixth goal of the season.
This was GSU's 8th match away from the home field in its 11th game of the season and just the third loss in the past eight matches.
Georgia State does not play this weekend and has a week to prepare for next Tuesday's match at No. 4 Wake Forest (9-1-2).
