DULUTH, Ga. – Despite four golfers in the top 25, Georgia State stands fifth following the first day of the fifth annual AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic at Berkeley Hills Country Club. The Panthers shot rounds of 292 and 284 to sit at even par entering Tuesday's final round.
Lipscomb scorched the field with rounds of 279 and 274 to sit at 23-under par. The 14-under round in the afternoon was just one stroke off the tournament record. The Bisons were led by Dawson Armstrong who shot 65-67 to stand at 12-under par with a seven stroke leading entering the final round. His opening round 65 matched the lowest individual round in the five year history of the tournament.
For the Panthers, junior Nathan Mallonee, coming off a career-best finish in Los Cabos just last week, shot rounds of 72 and 70 to sit at 2-under par, tied for 11th place.
“Our guys had the chance to go really low today,” head coach Joe Inman said. “However, we made some mistakes that cost us. We will challenge ourselves to move up a few more spots on the leaderboard on Tuesday and see where we can finish.”
Lipscomb holds a 10-stroke lead over South Florida which stands at 13-under with 18 holes to play. Sun Belt foe Troy is third at 4-under, followed by defending champion UNC Greensboro in fourth at 3-under. The Panthers are just three strokes back at even.
Armstrong is on pace to shatter the individual tournament scoring record of 10-under held by South Florida's Chase Koepka who is also competing this week. He leads a group of three at 5-under, including teammate Eric Ansett, UNC Greensboro's Taylor Coalson and Chattanooga's Andrew Weathers. Troy's Clay Vannoy, along with South Florida teammates Rigel Fernandes and Oskar Bergqvist are tied for fifth at 4-under.
Sophomore Alexander Herrmann shot rounds of 71-73 to stand tied for 20th with teammate Nathan Williams who is competing as an individual this week. Williams shot 73-71 to stand at even par.
Sophomore Max Herrmann added rounds of 73-72 to stand at 1-over par and tied for 22nd along with senior J.J. Grey who shot 76-69. The pair are 1-over with 18 holes to play.
Redshirt-freshman James Kyles, also competing as an individual shot rounds of 73 and 79 to stand tied for 68th at 8-over, while redshirt-freshman Sean Murphy added rounds of 74 and 79 to sit at 9-over and tied for 71st.
Hayden Poole also competed as an individual for the Panthers shoot 73-81 to sit at 10-over and tied for 75th. Freshman Nick Budd rounded out the line-up with rounds of 81-77 and is tied for 80th.
Freshman Sam Asbury rounded out the group of individuals shooting 80-81 to sit at 17-over and in 87th place.
Teams will go off holes No. 1 and No. 10 on Tuesday morning beginning at 8 a.m. The Panthers will be paired with Chattanooga, South Alabama and Francis Marion beginning at 8:15 a.m. ET off hole No. 1.
This week's field includes a pair of top 50 teams and eight top 100 squads in the latest Golfweek rankings.

Following this week's event, Georgia State will return to the course for the final event of the fall, the UNCG Bridgestone Collegiate Oct. 24-25, at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
