GREENVILLE, S.C. – In the final match of the Gray Griffin Memorial Tournament the Georgia State men's soccer team was defeated by Furman 5-0 Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Aaron Jones and freshman Jad Elkhalil were both named to the all-tournament team.
The Paladins opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Lewis Hawke scored his first goal of the season. CJ Cochran saved Brendan Richardson's initial shot off a Furman corner kick but the rebound fell to Hawke for the goal.
CJ Cochran recorded his second save of the match in the 23rd minute but that was the only shot on target for either team in the remainder of the first half.
- GSU attempted one more shot (5-4) during the first 45 minutes and took four of the five corners of the first half.
In the first action of the second half Cocrhan recorded two saves on a pair of attempts by Evan De Ycaza in the 49th and 53rd minute. Furman then doubled its lead in the 56th minute when Marco Ortiz found the back off the net off a cross by De Ycaza. Just over a minute later Bobby Edet scored to give the Paladins a 3-0 lead.
Eleven minutes later Furman found the back of the net for the third time in the second half to extend its lead to 4-0 on Cameron Robinson's goal. The Paladins added a fifth goal in the 79th minute and the match ended 5-0 to Furman.
- Georgia State attempted 10 shots in the game but only one was on goal.
- While Furman took 15 shots, including 10 on target.
- CJ Cochran finished the match with five saves on 15 shots faced.
- The Panthers return to the GSU Soccer Complex on Saturday, Sept. 13 to host North Florida in the team's home opener.
