Men's Golf Third Entering Final Round at Kiawah

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Georgia State men's golf team tied for the second lowest round of the day with a 1-under 287 to move into third place entering the final round of The Invitational at The Ocean Course on Kiawah Island. Three Panthers are among the top-18 with 18 holes to play as the team stands at 8-over.

Senior Damon Stephenson led the Panthers on Saturday with a 2-under 70 and stands 10th at even par after 36 holes. Stephenson eagled both front nine par-5s with a pair of two-foot putts. He had opened play with a 74 on Friday.

“I am really proud of our team's effort today,” head coach Joe Inman said. “We eliminated the big numbers and put together a really good round. I have been impressed with the number of birdies that our team has made the first two days on a very difficult course. If we finish strong tomorrow, this will be a great result for us in our first tournament of the year.”

The Panthers 1-under round tied with Georgia Southern for the second lowest round of the day, only behind leader South Florida's 4-under 284. Only three teams broke par on Saturday.

Along with the two eagles, Stephenson's round included a pair of birdies. He is among the group of 10 golfers in the 81-player field at even par or better.

Sophomore Nathan Mallonee shot a second round even par 72 and stands tied for 11th at 1-over thru 36 holes. Mallonee made three birdies during his round after shooting 73 on Friday.

Freshman Max Herrmann rebounded nicely on Saturday to shoot a 1-under 71 and now stands at 6-over and tied for 30th following an opening round 79.

Senior Davin White shot a 2-over 74 and stands tied for 18th at 3-over after an opening round 73.

Senior Gus Wagoner also shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for 34th entering the final round. Wagoner made a pair of birdies and is 7-over after 36 holes.

Junior J.J. Grey, competing as an individual, shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for 11th at 1-over par for the tournament. He birdied two of his last three holes.

South Florida, the lone team under par, stands at 10-under with a 16-stroke lead entering the final round. Georgia Southern stands second at 6-over, with the Panthers in third at 8-over. Kentucky trails Georgia State by one at 9-over, while Troy rounds out the top five in fifth at 11-over.

Western Carolina's Bright Julamool shot a 5-under 67 and has a one-stroke lead at 8-under par entering the final round. South Florida's Chase Koepka and Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes are tied for second at 7-under par. Troy's Jared Bettcher is fourth at 5-under, while Kentucky's Cooper Musselman rounds out the top five at 4-under.

The Ocean Course hosted the 2012 PGA Championship as well as the 1991 Ryder Cup, one of the most remembered events in golf history that became known as the “War on the Shore.”

The 14-team field will go off in a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Sunday. The Panthers will be paired with South Florida and Georgia Southern, going off the first three holes. Live scoring can be found throughout the tournament at Golfstat.com.
