Men's Golf 19th After Round One of the NCAA Championship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – It took nearly 36 hours to complete the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship at Prairie Dunes Golf Club, but with the first round in the books, Georgia State stands in a tied for 19th place.

The Panthers shot an opening round 5-over, 285, and stand just seven strokes outside the top eight which will qualify for the match play portion of the championship after 54 holes.

Originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, Georgia State will play its second round on Sunday morning.

Senior Tyler Gruca, coming off a third place finish at the NCAA San Antonio Regional, and junior Davin White led the Panthers with a pair of 69s on the par-70 Perry Maxwell course. The duo is tied for 30th with 36 holes to play.

The top 40 individuals and ties are scheduled to play an additional 18 holes on Monday to determine the individual champion.

“Conditions were pretty good for scoring today,” head coach Joe Inman said. “The wind stayed down and that allowed for some good scores. We had three really good scores all things considered. We know it will take everyone playing well to get us in the top eight after 54 holes of play.”

Gruca's 1-under round included four birdies, including a stretch of three in four holes at the turn.

White's round of 69 included three birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Freshman Nathan Mallonee shot a 1-over, 71, to open play on Saturday and is tied for 62nd. His round included three birdies, including one on the par-4, 535-yard 11th hole.

Sophomore J.J. Grey opened play with a 6-over 76. After making a double bogey on his first hole yesterday, Grey made a pair of birdies and was just 1-over making the turn. Unfortunately his 5-over, 40 on the back nine put him in the clubhouse at 6-over and tied for 131st.

Junior Damon Stephenson rounded out the Panthers line-up with a 9-over, 79. Stephenson's round was derailed by a pair of double bogeys and a triple bogey. He is tied for 152nd.

No. 22 South Carolina leads at 8-under following an opening round 272. No. 15 Oklahoma is second at 7-under, with No. 1 Alabama and No. 23 Auburn tied for third at 6-under. No. 31 SMU rounded out the top five with a 5-under 275.

South Carolina's Will Starke opened play with a 6-under, 64 to hold the individual lead following the opening round. Oklahoma's Charlie Saxon and Virginia's Denny McCarthy are tied for second at 5-under. A group of five golfers are tied for fourth at 4-under.

Live scoring of the entire championship will be available at Golfstat.com and on the Golfstat mobile app.

When the second round gets under way, Georgia State will once again be paired with Purdue and Iowa State.
