HUTCHINSON, Kan. – With only a few holes under its belt following three rain delays that totaled more than eight hours, the Georgia State men's golf team stands in a tie for sixth place at 1-over following the opening day of the NCAA Golf Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
Teams were delayed twice before Georgia State ever got on the course in the morning. When the Panthers final did get to play this afternoon, it only lasted a little more than an hour before play was suspended for the day.
Freshman Nathan Mallonee played four holes and is 1-over par following a bogey at the fourth hole. Sophomore J.J. Grey stands at 2-over thru four holes. After a double bogey at the first, he responded with a birdie on the third before a bogey at the fourth.
Junior Damon Stephenson is 1-over par after three holes following a bogey at the first, while junior Davin White is 1-under after two holes. White drained a beautiful 25-foot birdie putt on the first hole. Senior Tyler Gruca was the last one off for the Panthers and finished just one hole, making a par on the first hole.
Gruca will have a birdie putt on the second hole when play resumes at 8 a.m. ET on Saturday morning. Georgia State will finish its first round and then watch at the second wave tees off.
“It was tough with the weather delays today, but that is part of the game,” head coach Joe Inman said. “We had it better than most as we never teed off until the second delay was over. We will get a good dinner is us and be ready to get back out on the course early Saturday morning.
No. 40 Oregon has the early lead at 3-under, with No. 50 Iowa State and No. 31 SMU tied for second at 2-under. A total of 15 of the 30 teams played some golf on Friday.
Oregon's Zach Foushee has the early individual lead at 3-under thru six holes.
