Men's Golf Wins Irish Creek Intercollegiate

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Georgia State earned a one stroke victory at the Irish Creek Collegiate on Sunday to win its second straight tournament and third of the season. The Panthers finished ahead of a pair of top 50 teams in the 16-team field as Davin White and J.J. Grey both finished among the top 10 individually.

The back-to-back wins and three wins in a season (AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic in the fall) are both firsts for the historic program. Georgia State will look for its third straight win at the Sun Belt Conference Championship April 21-23 before heading to the NCAA Regional in May. The Panthers are currently ranked No. 47 in the country by GolfStat.

Georgia State shot a fina- round 5-over 289 on the par 71 course to finish the 54-hole event at 7-over par, one stroke ahead of No. 50 North Florida. The Panthers and Ospreys entered the day tied for the lead.

White finished tied for fifth at 2-under par following his second straight 1-under par 70. He made three birdies and an eagle at the par-5 13th hole and earned his second straight top five finish after a third place result at the Furman Intercollegiate last weekend.

“I am incredibly proud of the way our guys played,” head coach Joe Inman said. “A week after we had to share victory with a very good Virginia Tech team, our guys wanted to prove this week that they were capable of winning outright.

“We fell behind in the middle of the round, but they never gave up. This team is hungry and knows it can compete with anyone in the country. We have to keep improving, but if we do, we know that anything can happen when NCAAs come around.”

Grey shot a final-round 2-over 73 to finish tied for eighth at even par, just a week after earning a second-place finish at the Furman Intercollegiate. Grey made three birdies over a five-hole stretch on the back nine to help pace the Panthers.

Senior Tyler Gruca, who has still never missed a tournament in his four-year career, shot a final-round 1-under 70 to tie for 38th at 10-over par. After a rough start to the tournament, Gruca played his final 36 holes even par.

Freshman Nathan Mallonee shot a final-round 6-over 77 to finish the tournament 7-over and tied for 25th. After a rough stretch of holes in the middle of his round, Mallonee made three straight birdies between 12 and 14 to help the Panthers.

Junior Damon Stephenson rounded out the line-up with a final-round 76 to finish at 9-over par and tied for 30th.

Georgia State and UNF finished well ahead of the rest of the field with the solid final rounds. Co-host Charlotte and No. 36 Wake Forest finished tied for third at 19-over par, while Ohio State rounded out the top five at 21-over par. Close behind in a tie for sixth were Duke and Notre Dame at 22-over par.

UNF's MJ Maguire, ranked No. 54 in the country, earned low medalist honors at 8-under par following a final-round 68. Akron's Charlie Bull and Notre Dame's Niall Platt tied for second at 4-under par with Charlotte's Thomas Rowland finishing fourth at 3-under. Wake Forest's Clancy Waugh tied with White for fifth at 2-under.

Georgia State will return to the course for the Sun Belt Conference Championship at Grand Bear Golf Course in Saucier, Miss., April 21-23.
