Men's Golf Tied for Lead at Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Georgia State shot a tournament low 7-under 281 to stand tied for the lead at the Furman Intercollegiate with one round to play. Three Panthers shot in the 60s and now stand in the top-10 on the individual leaderboard entering the final round on Sunday.

Sophomore J.J. Grey made seven birdies in the second round, including five straight on the front nine to shoot a 5-under 67 and move into second place at 8-under for the tournament.

Junior Davin White shot a second-round 4-under 68 following an opening round 72 to move into a tie for fourth at 4-under. White also made seven birdies on Saturday.

Senior Tyler Gruca shot the Panthers third round in the 60s, a 3-under 69, to move to 3-under for the tournament and stand in a tie for 8th.

The Panthers are tied with No. 10 Virginia Tech at 8-under for the tournament after opening with a 287 on Friday. No. 36 Kennesaw State stands third at 6-under par following a round of 282 on Saturday. USC Upstate is fourth at 2-over with Akron rounding out the top five at 3-over.

“We played really well today,” head coach Joe Inman said. “We had three players take it really low and two others who fought and never gave up. The round showed our guys how close we are to being one of the top teams in country. Now we need to finish the job on Sunday.”

Freshman Nathan Mallonee shot a second-round 77 and stands in a tie for 61st at 7-over.

Junior Damon Stephenson struggled early, standing 6-over after four holes, but fought back to shoot a 2-under 34 on his second nine and shoot 77 on Saturday. He stands in a tied for 72nd at 8-over with 18 holes to play.

Georgia State also had four players competing as individuals. Senior Grant Cagle shot a second-round 81 and stands in a tie for 61st at 7-over. He opened play with a 70 on Friday.

Ross Mclister shot 78 on Saturday and is now 9-over and tied for 81st entering the final round.

Victor Lavin improved by six strokes from Friday and shot a second round 75. He is now 12-over and in a tie for 93rd.

Kevin Lee rounded out the line-up with a second-round 79 to stand in a tie for 105th.

Virginia Tech's Trevor Cone, ranked No. 69 in the country, leads the field at 9-under par. He is one stroke ahead of Grey at 8-under. Kennesaw State's Austin Vick is third at 6-under par. A group of four are tied for fourth at 4-under, including White, Kennesaw State's Jimmy Beck, Temple's Brandon Matthews and Western Carolina's J.T. Poston, who is ranked No. 9 in the country.

The final round play slated for Sunday beginning with tee times at 8 a.m. Georgia State will go off with Virginia Tech and Kennesaw State beginning at 12:10 p.m.

Following the event, Georgia State will return to the course for its final regular season event April 5-6 for the Irish Creek Intercollegiate in Kannapolis, N.C.
