Men's Golf Finishes Seventh at Schenkel Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Georgia State men's golf team finished seven out of a strong 15-team field on Sunday in the prestigious Schenkel Invitational at the Forest Heights Country Club. The Panthers finished the event at 7-over par, just three strokes behind No. 10 Virginia and No. 15 Texas.

The field included four teams ranked in the top 15 in the country and 13 in the top 100.

Sophomore J.J. Grey and senior Tyler Gruca led the way for Georgia State as both finished in a tie for 22ndat 2-over. Grey tied for a team-low final round shooting 73 to go with his 77 and 68 from the first two days. Gruca finished round three with a 78 after posting a 72 and 68 in the first two rounds.

It was Grey's fourth top-25 finish of the spring. The Panthers entered the week ranked No. 56 in the nation by Golfweek.

“I am really proud of the way our guys played this weekend,” head coach Joe Inman said. “We showed that we can play with some of the best teams in the country. This was a very strong field and to finish just three strokes behind a pair of top 15 teams shows just how close we are to being a top 25 team.”

Georgia State shot a final round 297 a day after shooting a 15-under 273, the second lowest round in school history and the lowest round of the tournament.

Junior Davin White finished tied for 29th at 3-over following a final round 76.

Damon Stephenson posted a final round 75 to finish in a tie for 32nd at 5-over, snapping a string of four straight top 25 finishes for the junior.

Freshman Nathan Mallonee tied for the team-low round on Sunday with a 73 and finished at 7-over par, which tied for 49th.

Senior Grant Cagle, competing as an individual, shot a final round 76 to finish the 54-hole event at 15-over par and tied for 80th.

Host Georgia Southern finished at 14-under par and took home the team title after shooting 288 on the final day. No. 14 UAB finished second at 6-under, followed by No. 6 UCF in third at 2-under. No. 10 Virginia and No. 15 Texas finished tied for fourth at 4-over, with the College of Charleston just one stroke back in sixth at 5-over.

Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes won the individual title with a 7-under, three-round total of 209. Martin Rohwer of UAB finished tied second at 5-under (211) with Virginia's Jimmy Stanger one stroke behind Rohwer in third with a 212 (4-under). Will Evans and Henry Mabbett of Georgia Southern finished four shots behind their teammate Wolfes at 3-under to finish tied for fourth.

Georgia State will return to the course March 28-30 for the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C.
