Men's Golf Shoots 15-under at Schenkel Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga. –The Georgia State men's golf team shot the second lowest round in school history, a 15-under, 273, to jump seven spots and into seventh place at the Schenkel Invitational at Forest Heights Country Club. In a field that includes four teams in the top 15 and 13 in the top 100 of the latest rankings, the Panthers shot the low round of the day by three strokes.

Georgia State stands at 2-under par with 18 holes to play, just one stroke behind fifth place.

All five Panthers broke par as junior Davin White led the way with a 5-under 67. Georgia State also counted a pair of 68s and a 70.

“That was an incredible round of golf,” head coach Joe Inman said. “I had a feeling we were going to play well today, but that just took it to a whole different level. If we can use that momentum tomorrow and shoot another good round, this could give us a great finish in a great tournament.”

Senior Tyler Gruca shot one of the Panthers two 68s and is tied for eighth at 4-under par entering the final round. He carded four birdies while going bogey free on the second day of the tournament.

White carded his 67 with one eagle, six birdies and three bogeys. He posted the third lowest score of the day, just two behind the low round of 65 by Federico Zucchetti of UCF. He started the day in a tie for 57th but is now tied for 19th with a score of 143 (1-under) through two rounds.

Sophomore J.J. Grey carded a 68 that saw him jump into a tie for 28th after 36 holes. He finished with five birdies and only one bogey.

Junior Damon Stephenson and freshman Nathan Mallonee both posted 2-under 70s in round two. Stephenson sits in a tie for 33rd and is currently 2-over (146) after day two. Mallonee is 6-over (150) and is tied for 58th with one round to play.

Senior Grant Cagle, competing as an individual, finished with a 7-over 79 in round two and is currently tied for 80th.

Tournament host Georgia Southern is four shots clear of the field atop the team leaderboard. The Eagles posted a score of 12-under (276) in round two and are 14-under through (562) 36 holes. Day one leader No. 14 UAB is second at 10-under (566). College of Charleston is alone in third after finishing day two of the tournament 11-under (277). The Cougars are 9-under overall (567).

No. 67 Kramer Hickok of Texas and Martin Rohwer of UAB are tied for the individual lead at 6-under (138) through 36 holes. Five players are tied for second just one stroke off the lead, including day 1 leader Taylor Hancock of UNF. Also in the group are Georgia Southern's Hayden Anderson, No. 95 Beau Hossler of Texas, No. 52 MJ Maguire of UNF and Virginia's Jimmy Stanger.

Among the schools Georgia State is ahead of are No. 10 Virginia, No. 28 Kentucky, Ole Miss, NC State and Florida.

Following this week's action, Georgia State will return to the course March 28-30 for the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C.
