Men's Golf Tied for Fourth at Palmetto Intercollegiate

Aiken, S.C. – Led by juniors Damon Stephenson and Davin White, both tied for 10th, the Georgia State men's golf team is tied for fourth at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at Palmetto Golf Club. The Panthers shot rounds of 294 and 291 to stand at 25-over entering the final round on Tuesday.

Stephenson, who has finished in the top-20 in the last four events, shot rounds of 73 and 72 to stand at 5-over. White shot 74 and 71 on the par-70 course as the 18-team field played 36 holes on Monday.

Georgia State entered the week ranked No. 54 in the latest Golfweek rankings and is facing three top-25 teams this week.

“We played really well today,” head coach Joe Inman said. “This is a tough course with a very good field and to be in fourth with one round of play is a great position to be in. If we can put together a solid round on Tuesday, there is no reason that we cannot jump another spot or two up the leaderboard.”

Freshman Nathan Mallonee, who is among the favorites for Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, shot rounds of 73 and 74 to stand at 7-over and in a tie for 27th.

Sophomore J.J. Grey shot back-to-back rounds of 74 and is tied for 33rd in the 90-player field.

Senior Tyler Gruca rounded out the Panthers line-up with rounds of 74 and 76 to stand at 10-over and tied for 47th.

No. 27 Clemson opened a six-stroke lead following rounds of 281 and 290 to stand at 11-over par. No. 11 Virginia is second at 17-over par, shooting 290 and 287 on day one. No. 25 South Carolina is third at 19-over, with Georgia State and Wofford tying for fourth at 25-over.

Clemson's Austin Langdale is alone in first at 2-under par following back-to-back rounds of 69. Virginia's Derek Bard, South Carolina's Will Starke and Furman's Preston Heyward are tied for second at 1-over. NC State's Logan Harrell rounds out the top-five at 2-over, shooting 71 in both of the first two rounds on Monday.

Following this week's action, Georgia State will return to the course next Friday for the Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern at Forest Heights Country Club.
