ATLANTA – It came down to the final match on the court, but the Georgia State men's tennis team upset No. 67 ETSU 4-3 thanks to junior Sofiane Chevallier's win at No. 6 singles.
Chevallier defeated Roger Ordeig 6-5 (8-6), 6-2 to clinch the match for the Panthers. It was GSU's first win over a ranked opponent this season.
The Panthers started off the match by taking the doubles point 2-1. GSU won at No. 1 doubles with Thomas Cook and Robert Schulze defeating Ismael Merino and Diego Nunez 6-4. Georgia State also won at No. 3 doubles with Jannis Koeke and Sofiane Chevallier defeating Ricardo Pabon and Conner Huertas 6-5. Valentin Horvat and Christian Gochnauer, making his collegiate debut, lost to David Biosca and Sebastian Yllera 6-1 at the No. 2 doubles spot.
In singles, Georgia State split the first five matches played. At No. 1 singles, Cook lost to Biosca 6-3, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Schulze won 6-5, 6-4. At No. 3 singles, Koeke defeated Yllera 6-0, 6-4.
Felipe Jaworski lost to Huertas 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Horvat lost to Ismael Merino at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-1.
“We as coaches could not be any more proud of the resilience our young men showed today," head coach Joerg Barthel said. "They responded to adversity very well and came up with the best tennis when it mattered. Our leadership was at the level it needs to be for us to be successful."
The Panthers have one more match this weekend, facing No. 29 Oklahoma State Sunday morning at 9 a.m. at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
