DELAND, Fla. - The No. 68 Georgia State men's tennis team defeated Stetson 4-3 Friday afternoon in DeLand, Fla. The Panthers have now won three of their last four matches.
After the Panthers won the doubles point, GSU won two of the next five singles matches. Tied at 3-3, the match came down to No. 4 singles. Junior Sofiane Chevallier lost the first set 6-1 to Chester Espie. Chevallier then won the second set 7-6 and secured the win with a 6-3 third set.
The two other Panthers that won their singles matches were Jannis Koeke at No. 2 singles and Felipe Jaworski at No. 6 singles. Chevallier defeated Laurynas Antropikas 6-3, 6-1. Jaworski defeated Hans Adrian Riseng 6-2, 7-5.
Robert Schulze, at No. 3 singles, lost a tough three-setter to Cahit Kapukiran 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3). Eric Baum also lost in three sets at No. 5 singles to Graham Bell, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. At No. 1 singles, Thomas Cook lost to Nathan Debut 6-4, 6-4.
Georgia State narrowly won the doubles point, winning 8-7 at both the No.1 and 3 doubles spots. At No. 1 doubles, Chevallier and Schulze defeated Riseng and Kapukiran 8-7 (7-5). At No. 3 doubles, Cook and Koeke defeated Debut and Ball 8-7 (8-6).
The Panthers have one more match in Florida this weekend, playing UCF on Saturday in Orlando. The Panthers and the Knights will face off at 11 a.m.
