ATLANTA - The Georgia State men's tennis team picked up its second consecutive win Friday, defeating UAB 4-1 at the Dunwoody Country Club.
The Panthers won the first four flights of singles matches after dropping the doubles point.
At No. 1 singles, senior Thomas Cook battled to defeat No. 86 Chris Helliar for the three-set win, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. This was Cook's first win over a ranked opponent in his career.
At No. 2 singles, freshman Jannis Koeke defeated Rafael Rondino 6-1, 7-5. Senior Robert Schulze won against Lucas Dirube 7-6, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles spot. Junior Sofaine Chevallier won at the fourth position, defeating Mitchell Martell 6-2, 7-6.
In doubles, Valentin Horvat and Eric Baum lost to Martell and Helliar 8-7 (7-5) at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Cook and Koeke lost to Rondino and Luiz Felipe Pinto 8-3.
"We want to thank Dunwoody Country Club and its members for helping our players experience a great college tennis environment," head coach Joerg Barthel said. "We played with a lot of energy and hard and competed at the level we want to be at. It was a great team win."
The Panthers will be back in action Sunday against No. 59 Nebraska. The Panthers and the Huskers will begin at 10 a.m. at the Blackburn Tennis Center.
