VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. – Junior J.J. Grey shot a second round 2-under 68 to lead the Georgia State men's golf team to an afternoon 4-over 284 at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate on Monday. In a field that includes seven top 50 teams, the Panthers stand 12th entering the final round on Tuesday at the Old Overton Club.
Georgia State, which entered the event ranked No. 43 in the country by Golfweek, improved by 22 strokes following a morning round 306 that has left them 30-over following two rounds.
Grey stands in a tie for 20th at 3-over par following rounds of 75 and 68. His second round included four birdies and just two bogeys.
“I was disappointed at how we played this morning, but proud to see the way the team rebounded in the afternoon,” head coach Joe Inman said. “It will be important for us to come out and play well on Tuesday and see if we can move up a few spots on the leaderboard. The way we played in the afternoon is much closer to the way I expect we should be playing.”
Host and 21st-ranked Alabama was the only team to break par on Monday and stands at 7-under following rounds of 268 and 285. No. 2 Florida State and No. 5 Georgia Tech are tied for second at 3-over par with 18 holes to play. No. 24 UAB, No. 35 UAB and No. 44 Arkansas are tied for fourth at 9-over. The Panthers are within 10 strokes of seventh-place.
Following an opening-round 75, senior Damon Stephenson shot an afternoon 71 to stand at 6-over par and tied for 34th. Stephenson made six birdies over the course of two rounds.
Senior Davin White shot rounds of 79 and 74 to stand tied for 51st at 13-over par.
Sophomore Nathan Mallonee shot a pair of 77s and is 14-over and tied for 53rd entering the final round.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman Alexander Herrmann shot 88 in the morning before rebounding nicely with an afternoon 71. Herrmann stands in 60th-place entering the final round.
Florida State's Hank Lebioda, Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederjans and Mississippi State's Ben Wood share the 36-hole lead at 6-under par. Wood shot an afternoon 7-under 63 for the Bulldogs. Alabama's Robby Shelton stands fourth at 4-under followed by teammate Dru Love in fifth at 3-under. Only six golfers in the 60-player field are currently under par.
The Panthers are returning to the Jerry Pate for the first time since 2011 which ended a five-year run at the event. Georgia State's best finish came in 2006 when the Panthers finished fifth.
Alabama has won the last two Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate's on the way to a pair of national championships. Past low medalists at the tournament have included Stanford's Tiger Woods, LSU's David Toms, Arizona's Rory Sabbatini, Georgia Tech's Bryce Molder, Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan and Wake Forest's Bill Haas.
