ATLANTA - The No. 74 Georgia State women's tennis team, after cruising to a 3-0 lead, rallied to 4-3 win over Troy. Junior Chaimaa Roudami clinched the match for the Panthers with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Troy's Brooke Durden at No. 6 singles.
The Panthers (1-0) kicked off the match winning the doubles team. No. 23 doubles team Abigail Tere-Apisah and Masa Grgan cruised to a 6-1 win over Anja Cosovic and Trang Huynh. At No. 3 singles Linn Timmermann and Chaimaa Roudami won 6-3 over Durden and Lyubov Dorofeeva.
The No. 8 singles player in the country, Abigail Tere-Apisah, won 6-0, 6-4 over Dorofeeva. In the second set, Tere-Apisah feel behind 3-0 before rallying to win six of the next seven games. At No. 4 singles, Timmermann dominated and defeated Monica Gonzalez 6-0, 6-0. Roudami's win at No. 6 singles clinched the match and gave the Panthers their third singles win of the day.
At No. 2 singles, Grgan fell 7-6, 6-2 to Huynh and Marcia Tere-Apisah lost to Cosovic 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Tarani Kamoe lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to Margot De Haan.
"It was a good team effort against conference opponent," Stephenson said. "We battled through some nerves in our first match, but overall we're pleased to get the first win. A few of our upperclassmen stepped up and were catalysts for our team. I'm proud of Chaimaa stepping up and clinching the victory for us."
The Panthers are scheduled to play Mercer on Wednesday, weather permitting, at Piedmont Park at 2 p.m.
