Gruca Tied for Ninth at Rees Jones Invitational

DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. – Georgia State senior Tyler Gruca opened the season with a first-round 72 at the Rees Jones Invitational on Sunday to stand tied for ninth with 36 holes to play. The Panthers shot a first-round 304 and stand alone in tenth-place at Haig Point Golf Club.

Gruca made two birdies in his round, playing in the 33rd-straight tournament of his career. He has never missed an event since earning a walk-on spot before his freshman season.

“I was happy with the way Tyler played, but think we came out too tight as a team,” head coach Joe Inman said. “I think nerves just got to us a little today and we tried too hard. The good thing is that there are still 36 holes to play and we can move up the leaderboard rather quickly. I expect we will play much better on Monday.”

Junior Damon Stephenson stands tied for 36th following a first-round 76. Senior Kevin Lee and junior Davin White each fired rounds of 78 and are tied for 47th.

Sophomore Jonathan “J.J.” Grey, who earned All-America Honorable Mention recognition last year, stands tied for 55th following a first-round 79. In 13 career tournaments, Grey has only finished outside of the top 20 once.

Senior Victor Lavin, competing as an individual, shot an opening-day 78 to stand tied for 47th.

South Florida was the lone school to break par on the first day and stands in first-place at 2-under par. Kennesaw State is second following an opening day 2-over 290. Charlotte and No. 43 Liberty are tied for third at 3-over, followed by UNCW at 8-over.

Georgia State finished second at the Rees Jones in 2008 and has followed with sixth and seventh place performances in 2009 and 2011 respectively. The Panthers are just six strokes outside of the top-six.

South Florida's Chase Koepka leads after a first-round 4-under 68. East Carolina's Al Dickens, Kennesaw State's Chris Guglielmo and Charlotte's Raoul Menard are tied for second at 2-under par. There is a five-way tie for fifth at 1-under, with Gruca tied for ninth with six others.

Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. again on Monday. The Panthers will be off the first tee at 8:50 with Charleston Southern and East Carolina. Live scoring can be found throughout the tournament at Golfstat.com.
