Led by a pair of top 15 finishes, Georgia State
finished seventh on Tuesday at the Cleveland Golf/Palmetto Intercollegiate at
the Palmetto Club in Aiken, S.C. Freshman Jonathan Grey finished tied for 12th
with sophomore Davin White finishing tied for 15th in the 18-team
field.
For Grey, it was his seventh top 20 finish in seven tournaments
this year. After shooting rounds of 74 and 71 on the par 70 course on Monday,
Grey shot a final round 71 to finish at 6-over as only four golfers in the 90-player
field broke par.
White shot a final round 73 following a pair of opening day 72's
to finish the 54-hole even at 7-over.
The Panthers shot a final round 294 (14-over) after rounds of 294
and 290 on Monday.
“We played against some of the top teams in the southeast and I
think it showed how close we are to competing with them,” commented head coach
Joe Inman. “Now it is time to correct the little things and then we will start
beating those teams.”
After rounds of 71 and 74 on Monday, junior Tyler Gruca shot a
final round 76 to finish at 11-over par and tied for 24th, his
second top 25 finish of the year.
Junior Grant Cagle shot a final round 74 after rounds of 77 and 73
on Monday to finish tied for 36th , while sophomore Damon Stephenson
finished tied for 76th following a final round 76 that left him at 24-over par.
Augusta State shot the low round of the tournament to come from
behind and win by seven strokes over South Carolina. The Jaguars shot a final
round 2-over 282 to finish at 16-over, followed by the Gamecocks at 23-over. NC
State and Clemson tied for third at 24-over, followed by Liberty in fifth at
28-over.
USC Aiken's Matt Atkins shot a final round 70 to finish at 4-under
par and take low medalist honors. Virginia's Mac McLaughlin finished second at
2-under following a final round 73. Augusta State's Maverick Antcliff and South
Carolina's Matthew NeSmith tied for third at 1-under, followed by Clemson's
Stephen Behr in fifth at even par.
Georgia State will return to the course Saturday and Sunday at the
Mission Inn Spring Spectacular hosted by former CAA rival George Mason at the
Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The Panthers three-tournament stretch in 13
days will conclude at the Furman Intercollegiate, March 22-24.
