ATLANTA--The No. 38-ranked Georgia State women's
tennis team won a 7-0 contest against local-rival Kennesaw State on Friday
afternoon at the Blackburn Tennis Center.
Freshman
Linn Timmermann clinched the match for Georgia State (5-5) with a win at the
No. 4 singles position. The native of Rostock, Germany, won a 6-2, 6-4 match
against KSU's Tamara Plocher to give GSU a 4-0 lead and secure a
second-straight win.
The
Panthers won the doubles point vs. Kennesaw State (3-5) prior to singles play. It
was their fourth doubles point victory of the season. GSU's top pair, junior
Abigail Tere-Apisah and sophomore Masa Grgan, won their sixth match together on
the season. The duo is ranked No. 51 in the latest ITA National Doubles
rankings. The Panthers swept the doubles point thanks to two victories before
the No. 1 match at the No. 2 and 3 positions. The third doubles pair, senior
Maryna Kozachenko and sophomore Phoebe Chiem, played their first match together
this season and won an 8-2 match at the No.3 slot. Senior Whitney Byrd and
Jocely Ffriend won an 8-4 match at the second position.
Sophomore
Chaimaa Roudami kicked-off singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 5
singles slot. Kozachenko followed her victory with a 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 6
position to set up Timmerman's clinching victory.
Byrd
followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 3 slot before Tere-Apisah, the No.
22-ranked player in the ITA National Singles rankings, won a 6-4, 7-6 (9-7)
match in the No. 1 position. Grgan finished off a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (16-14) win to
close out the match.
GSU's
match on Sunday vs. No. 67-ranked Tulane has been rescheduled and relocated
from its originally-scheduled 9 a.m. start at the Blackburn Tennis Center. The
match will now be played at 8:30 a.m. at the Atlanta Athletic Club in John Creek,
