Hilton Head, S.C. – Led by freshman Jonathan Grey's final round
68, Georgia State shot a final round 8-over 296 to finish in seventh in the
18-team Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate on Tuesday afternoon. Grey secured
his third top 10 finish this season finished in seventh place.
The Panthers also finished their second round which was suspended
due darkness on Monday, shooting a 306. Georgia State finished 36-over par for
the 54-hole event.
Grey opened play on Monday with a first round 72, but struggled in
the afternoon shooting 78. His final round 68, which tied for the low round of
the tournament, gave him his fifth round in the 60's this season. He finished
at 2-over for the event. Grey has yet to finish outside of the top 20 in six
collegiate tournaments.
“I thought Jonathan played some really good golf this weekend and
never quit,” commented head coach Joe Inman. “He was 6-over with five holes to
play when play resumed this morning and finished strong. He used that to propel
himself into a great final round to move up 20 spots on the leaderboard.
“As a team, we have a few things to work on, but we have a few
weeks now before a stretch of three tournaments in 12 days. I think that
stretch will go a long way to making out postseason aspirations a reality.”
Junior Grant Cagle finished off an impressive second round 2-under
70 in the morning before shooting a 4-over 76 in the afternoon to finish tied
for 20th. Cagle finished at 7-over par.
Junior Tyler Gruca finished tied for 37th, finishing the
event with rounds of 77 and 78 on Tuesday. Gruca, who finished runner-up at
Wexford last year, finished at 14-over this year.
Junior Victor Lavin finished 51st, shooting a final
round 76 after shooting a second round, 9-over, 81.
Defending champion Damon Stephenson struggled in his first
tournament of the spring. A year ago, Stephenson was the only golfer under par
on the Hilton Head course, but after an opening round 74, he struggled in the
second and third, shooting rounds of 85 and 76 to finish tied for 53rd.
Georgia
Southern carded a 293 team score for the third round and rallied past second-round
leader Richmond to claim the team title with a 54-hole score of 879. Host
Francis Marion, which led after Monday's opening round, posted a final-round
296 tally and finished second in the team standings at 887, eight strokes
behind the Eagles.
Richmond
and the South Florida finished in a tie for third at 888, 24-over. Samford rounded out the top five at 33-over.
South
Florida's Trey Valentine overcame a one-stroke deficit during the final 18
holes to claim medalist honors with a four-under 212 total (69-73-70).
J.T. Poston (70-71-73) of Western Carolina and Scott Wolfes
(73-71-70) of Georgia Southern tied for second place, two strokes behind at
214.
South
Florida's Chase Koepka finished alone in fourth at 1-under followed by Georgia
Southern's Hayden Anderson in fifth at even par.
Georgia State will return to the course March 11-12 at the
Cleveland Golf/Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C. The two-day event will
begin a stretch of three tournaments in 13 days for the Panthers who are
looking to return to the NCAA Regionals in May.
